Ebook About Mob enforcer Ceaton Mercer has killed a lot of people in a lot of different ways - he stashed the last two bodies in a toolshed belonging to a sweetheart marine researcher in an idyllic island community - but he's really not such a bad guy. Over time he's found a home of sorts, and he even learns he's found a place in the hearts of the people he works with...at least enough so that they won't put a bullet in his head because he's outlived his usefulness to the boss. But he never thought he'd find one day could change his life, and he's about to discover how wrong he is.Because in a single day, he meets the man who looks to be the one, the love of his life. It's an improbable idea - a man who deals in death finding love - but it's like it's meant to be. That single day gets weirder and troubles pile up, forcing Ceaton to take a hard look at his dreary life and accept that one day can change everything, especially himself. His future might be brighter than he expects - if he can stay alive long enough to find out.Book A Day Makes (The Vault Book 1) Review :
"If being in bed with the wrong person could shatter you, could being with the right one change your life?"This short book has Mary Calmes' usual voice and story style, which you either like or don't. I enjoy her works myself. Many of her pieces (this one included) dive deep into the main character's stream of consciousness, flowing through someone's life and hearing all their thoughts. Sometimes, and in A Day Makes, it's also stream of consciousness in that it's a little disjointed, letting us in on side scenes of the MC's life for no particular plot point, just because we are on a Calmes' ride along. This is a fairly complete story...stops a little short for me. For those familiar with Calmes' work, this book is a shout out to both "Acrobat" and "Mine," both Calmes' books that include strong mob elements.Ceaton was planning on using his violent skills as a Marine, but that all goes wrong for him. So Ceaton's alternative career choice: mob man. He is a bad man, deep in mob life and comfortable and loyal with his murdering, drug dealing, protection selling mob 'family'. The story flows from before he joined up, through his mob work, and one step beyond. He is tough, cruel and violent...some torture is briefly described. We don't wallow in gory crime scenes, but we are led through a few. Ceaton takes his job as enforcer and murderer in stride and doesn't question his career choices."I liked fast, and if I was honest with myself, I knew why. If everything was a blur, I didn’t have to think or feel or anything, and I liked that just fine. If I concentrated on what I didn’t have—home, family, somebody permanent—it hurt. As long as I was moving at the speed of sound, nothing could get to me."Ceaton's life all falls apart and reshapes in a day...a very amazing no good very bad exciting single day. Not realistic, no, but there you go. Murder, mayhem and a surprise guest appearance brings it all together.Little is learned about the Love Interest, so I don't want to give away anything. He is in the vein of Calmes' lighter, flirty characters, intelligent and sweet. "He appeared puzzled, the way his brows furrowed, which was ten kinds of cute, like a befuddled bunny, and his mouth quirked to the side."Recommend, with the note that it's in a familiar Calmes' voice with familiar Calmes' features. With extra violence and sociopathic tendencies. For me it was a Calmes' fix, but not quite enough. (Of course, with an addiction, it's never 'enough').Some things I rate mm stories onSexy scale 1-5=3Limited but explicit mm sex occurs in this short book. I mean, the two only have a day together.Humor scale 1-5=2Often Calmes tells her tales from a lighter flirty voice, but not in this case.Likable MCs 1-5=2This is a tricky one to rate. I usually score based on them separately and together. We only get to hang with Ceaton, violent and loyal. We only have the day with the Love Interest. So we don't know how they will be together...and they are really different.Angst 1-5=3Murder, torture, revenge killings, all briefly and somewhat stoically described. Not pleasant stuff, so may be too much for some. Ceaton showed limited good features in this mob life.I highly recommend that you read "Mine" by Mary Calmes first. "Mine" is a complete book, with a different mob guy as the lead. The connection between that 'Mine' mob guy and his own love interest is established, interestingly twisted, and deep; several action and emotional layers to this other Calmes' book. At least one character from 'Mine' makes a guest appearance in 'A Day Makes.'If you like the idea of anti-heroes being your heroI also recommendGazes into You by Alex JaneWarrior's Cross by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux Every so often a book comes along that is so unexpected in character and plot line that you find yourself questioning your assumptions, not only within the book, but also in life. How do we define good and evil? What lengths would we go to in the worst of circumstances? I think I'm a good person but what if... How do you define your family? In what circumstances are we capable of redemption? So many questions, and those are only some of the ones this book made me examine. A Day Makes by Mary Calmes is no ordinary book and it will have you questioning every character and every situation, as well as yourself. Between the murder, mayhem and deep thinking it will provoke, there are some of the funniest situations and conversations imaginable, making this novel a truly extraordinary reading experience.Ceaton Mercer is a twenty-five year old ex marine, with no family or friends, and a very pressing need to get out of town immediately. When a car pulls up to the curb outside McCarren airport he yields to the inevitable. There'll be no escape for him and he'll be surprised if he lives through the day. An unexpected meeting leads to a whole new life, and a family in everything but blood. Ceaton has long ago given up thoughts of redemption. There's simply too much in his past and present to forgive. Finding a man to share his life for more than a quick hook up is absolutely impossible given his job and history. Resigning himself to loneliness, Ceaton spends the next five years working and supporting those closest to him. It's not as though he doesn't get opportunities. Someone as gorgeous and built as Ceaton certainly gets offers. Unfortunately they're usually guys who like to flirt with danger, because if there's one very strong vibe Ceaton gives off its menace, and those guys never stay around afterwards.Being a mob enforcer and protecting the people he now considers family is all Ceaton could expect or ask for. His loyalty is absolute and he trusts his friends with his life, as they do him. How could he possibly imagine the chaos and life changing events a sweetheart marine biologist would bring to his ordered world? In one single day Ceaton's life changes in ways he could never imagine and the family he's come to love expands and changes forever.A Day Makes is a superbly written, utterly riveting novel that will have leave you highly satisfied and more than a little mind blown. It is a book I will cherish on my special 5 star reread shelf for years to come. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
