"The Bridge of San Luis Rey" is a relatively short work of fiction set in South America in the early 1700s. The story is set around the lives of five people who happen to be on a bridge at the same time when it suddenly collapses. The story reflects great artistic talent and erudition of Thornton Wilder. The story was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1928 and remains iconic in literary circles.I enjoyed this novella very much. However it is not written in modern conversational English and required my full attention. It is definitely not a light easy read. I generally read it in short parts when I was not tired and could give the work my full attention. As such it took me longer to read than its actual length might suggest.This is the second novel of Thornton Wilder. The first is "The Cabala" which I have also read. It is clear to me that Thornton Wilder is very intelligent and well educated. "The Cabala" was past my ability to fully comprehend. This novel is much more easily read, but still not an easy read. As far as a comparison of a popular American contemporary author, I would put him at the opposite end of the intellectual style of Sinclair Lewis. Sinclair Lewis being a very easily read popular author of this period.As is often the case I listened to an audiobook while simultaneously reading a hard copy of this novel. The audiobook was narrated by Sam Waterston and he is excellent. However my audiobook had the narration out of order and I had to stop and locate one segment. It was all there in the end and proved a minor inconvenience. Just be aware of that. If I had only been listening and not reading along, I would have been mystified by the audiobook. This, of course, had nothing to do with the performance of Mister Waterston. I wrote to Audible. Perhaps they fixed this.In summary I completely enjoyed this short novel. It is definitely not a modern light read. Some readers will not enjoy this. The audiobook was excellent and complete but one segment was out of order. After a respite I intend to read another work of Thornton Wilder, perhaps "The Woman of Andros". Thank You... It is strange...the picture and headline are not what I ordered nor what I received. I did, however, receive what I thought I ordered - a good thing. Fortunately, mine is a cloth hard cover printed in 1928 and looks nothing like the Heritage edition of 1976. I am anxious to read the story that is printed on the thick pages. The story is engrossing, the illustrations are mesmerizing, and I am proud to be the caretaker of this 90yo tome.I discovered, buried in the pages, a stamp from the Joseph Horne Co - Book Shop Pittsburgh (now Macy's).
